TYPES OF PBC MEMBERSHIP

The Pennsylvania Business Council (PBC) formed in September 2007 by the merger of the Business Roundtable and Pennsylvanians for Effective Government (PEG).  PBC envisions a Commonwealth in which residents enjoy a very high quality of life in sustainable communities, where those seeking employment find high quality jobs with good compensation, and where those who invest their capital and hard work can grow firms that flourish and are profitable.  In order to create and renew this vision of Pennsylvania, PBC works aggressively to: define key long-term policy strategies and solutions that make the Commonwealth more competitive; and elect candidates for office who offer the best capacity to create and sustain a better Pennsylvania.

Firms enter PBC as "general members."  CEOs or other senior executives of General Member firms are invited to become part of the PBC Policy Roundtable.  Both levels of membership are described below:

PBC Policy Roundtable

The PBC Policy Roundtable, like its national counterpart in Washington, is a forum in which CEOs meet on a peer-to-peer basis to formulate public policy proposals to the most pressing issues of competitiveness. The Policy Roundtable provides senior managers the opportunity to interact extensively with policymakers, policy experts, media, and other stakeholders; participate in policy evaluation; vote on long-term public policy strategy; and guide policy education/advocacy efforts. Corporate Chairpersons, CEOs, COOs, CFOs, and Presidents (or the most senior person in PA for a firm with an out-of-state HQ), are invited to become members of the PBC Policy Roundtable. In addition to all of the General Member benefits, Policy Roundtable members:

  • Participate in at least three Policy Roundtable meetings with senior policymakers (generally Harrisburg, Pittsburgh and Philadelphia).
  • Provide testimony to legislative standing committees and state boards or commissions.
  • Are featured in PBC's CEO Spotlight series.
  • Are presented with oppotunites to appear on public affairs television and radio shows including the joint PBC-PCN CEO Roundtable.

Regional Association Membership

County or regional chambers of commerce, manufacturers associations or other local business associations receive all of the products and services afforded to General Members.  Staff may participate PBC and/or PEG PAC events.  Associations may re-use materials with their members with permission.  A separate agreement is required to re-sell participation in the Mandatory Monday Morning Meeting (call for information).

PBC Education Foundation
The PBC Education Foundation is a charitable organization approved by the IRS under section 501(c)(3) of the Code.  The PBC Education Foundation stimulates and encourages Pennsylvania citizens, and especially business persons, to take a more active part in civic and political affairs. "Membership" is not required or available, however the PBC Education Foundation does solicit tax-deductible corporate and private contributions to support its work.

The PBC Education Foundation commissions research, publishes reports, and conducts seminars to disseminate unbiased information on issues of civic affairs including business-related public policy, campaign finance, election law, political campaign strategies and actions, and candidates for public office.  The PBC Education Foundation does not advocate the adoption of any public policy proposal, or the election or defeat of any candidate.  The PBC Education Foundation works for increased and better informed voter participation.   The PBC Education Foundation often employs college and graduate interns as research analysts.  Many PBC interns go on to careers in public or government affairs.

PEG PAC
PBC members firms are not required to participate in PEG PAC -- the affiliated political action committee of the organization.  But, most choose to do so.

PEG PAC endorses, and supports pro-business candidates for state government office.  PEG PAC’s decision not to endorse any candidate does not mean that the candidates are deemed equally qualified.  PEG  PAC gets involved only in races where the organization can make a real difference.  PEG PAC doesn’t engage in contests it can’t win and doesn’t back those who are sure to win without PEG PAC’s help.  PEG PAC provides candidates with a mix of campaign contributions, professional consulting, demographic data, policy research, grass roots support, media exposure, information technology, and paid campaign staff.  The PEG PAC solicits and accepts personal and PAC contributions to support pro-business candidates.  Most PBC members contribute to the PEG PAC through the PEG PAC’s Annual Dinner.

PEG PAC solicits personal and PAC contributions to support its work.  Corporate contributions are not permissible by law.  Contributions are not tax-deductible.
